About this cohort

Karonga HDSS, the rural site in northern Malawi, was initiated in 2002 (baseline census 2002–2004) and follows ~35,000+ individuals; it grew out of the Karonga Prevention Study (started 1979 for leprosy/TB) and has been an INDEPTH and ALPHA network founder. Joined by a Lilongwe urban partner site under MEIRU. Captures HIV incidence, sexual behaviour, vaccine impact, NCDs and links to a deep archive of biological samples and population surveys over four decades.
